Metronidazole for acne: instructions for use

Composition and release form

Metronidazole is an antimicrobial, antibacterial and antiprotozoal agent that has a wide spectrum of action.

This is the first drug from the group of nitroimidazoles, it was discovered and synthesized in France and was produced under the trade name “Flagyl”. It was then licensed and produced by Pfizer in the USA. After the patent expired, many generics appeared, among which are Metrogyl, Klion, Trichopolum and others. This distribution is due to the high efficiency of this product.

Now this drug, as a medicine, is available in several forms:

  • Dental gel (Metrogil);
  • Gel for external use (Metrogil, Rozamet);
  • Injection solution (solution for infusion);
  • Vaginal gel (Metrogil);
  • Tablets (Trichopol);
  • Candles (Klion-D).

The main active ingredient is Metronidazole , the molecule of which, when interacting with a bacterium, disrupts its DNA structure, which leads to its death.

Contraindications and restrictions

Despite the large number of advantages that this remedy has, self-medication is contraindicated, because there are many restrictions and prohibitions on its use:

  • “interesting situation” (pregnancy) and lactation,
  • childhood and adolescence,
  • acute kidney failure, liver failure,
  • individual allergies,
  • complications in the functioning of the central nervous system,
  • chronic blood and circulatory diseases.

Side effects and contraindications are few. In these cases, it is strictly forbidden to treat eyelid disease with this remedy. Otherwise, adverse reactions may occur.

How does metronidazole work?

The main principle of action of this antimicrobial agent is that it disrupts the intracellular transport of bacterial protein and inhibits DNA synthesis of the microorganism cell. Metronidazole is also integrated into the respiratory chain of protozoa, which disrupts the respiratory processes in the cell, and the microorganism dies. Such a complex effect on the bacterium leads to disruption of its structure and subsequent death. It destroys all bacteria and microorganisms that are sensitive to it and that cause inflammation, including ulcers and pimples.

This remedy is active against:

  • Pathogenic microbes and bacteria;
  • Protozoan microorganisms;
  • And even parasites such as ticks.

Which can cause inflammation on the skin and the appearance of papules, pustules, boils and, of course, our “favorite” acne and blackheads.

Metronidazole for acne treatment

Metronidazole has the following proven effects when used externally:

  • Has an antiseptic effect;
  • Destroys pathogenic flora;
  • Reduces or eliminates inflammation;
  • Has a drying effect;
  • Accelerates wound healing.

For acne on the face, this drug should be taken orally only after being prescribed by your doctor. Only a doctor, based on the results of laboratory tests and a general examination, can decide on its use in the fight against inflammation of the skin.

Since uncontrolled use can seriously affect the general condition of the body.

It is safer to use Metronidazole topically, as a component of a mash or as part of Metrogyl gel. If you don’t want or can’t go to the doctor, then I recommend starting treatment with a gel or mash.

Since the use of tablets resembles the work of an antibiotic, which destroys the problem from the inside, it is better to check how suitable this remedy is for you from the outside.

Rules for treating demodicosis with Metronidazole

The dosage of Metronidazole in the treatment of demodicosis, as well as its duration, is determined by the doctor. It is prohibited to use the drug in a higher dosage or independently increase (decrease) the duration of therapy. This can cause complications and adverse reactions.

Taking Metronidazole for demodicosis should be carried out strictly according to the schedule. Skipping the next dose increases the risk of infection progression and development of parasite tolerance to the antibiotic. The missed pill should be taken as soon as possible. However, you should not take two tablets at once. This provokes dyspeptic disorders - nausea, vomiting, stool disorders.

Metronidazole is used under the supervision of a physician.

If the recommended dose is exceeded, the following symptoms are observed:

  • Dizziness, migraine, coordination problems;
  • Tachycardia (increased heart rate), tremors or numbness of the limbs, convulsions;
  • Nausea and vomiting.

Alcoholic drinks increase unpleasant symptoms and can lead to hot flashes, facial flushing, tingling in the extremities, severe vomiting and dehydration. Therefore, patients are advised to carefully read food labels and drug labels to avoid accidental consumption of alcohol.

Side effects

When using the drug, certain negative reactions may occur, in particular:

Immediate allergic reactions , namely: urticaria, anaphylactic shock, skin rashes, and skin hyperemia. They can occur both with long-term local use and when administered orally in the form of tablets.

Digestive system problems : diarrhea, vomiting, dry mouth and pancreatitis (only when taken orally as tablets or infusions).

Stomatitis, candidiasis (when taken orally in tablet form).

Also, during treatment, you should avoid alcoholic beverages, since taking them together can cause a significant impact on your well-being and health in general (applies only to systemic action, when taken in the form of tablets or infusions).

Causes

In humans, there are 2 types of subcutaneous mites: Demodex follicorum, which lives in the hair follicles and Demodex brevis, which is smaller in size and lives inside the sebaceous glands.
Normally, ticks are nothing more than part of a conditionally pathogenic flora, which acquires a pathogenic character only as a result of a demographic boom in parasites. Demodectic mites are not only found on humans. This disease is not uncommon in dogs and cats. However, it should be remembered that demodicosis is not transmitted between different biological species, since in different animals it is caused by different types of mites from the genus Demodex.

Microscopic parasites begin to multiply rapidly, as a rule, against the background of a weakened immune system. Precise factors for the rapid development of demodicosis. Among these reasons are the following:

  • severe stress and emotional fatigue;
  • a diet with a large share of fatty, smoked, fried and spicy foods;
  • use of fatty face creams;
  • frequent and sudden changes in temperature and humidity;
  • large doses of ultraviolet radiation and excessive tanning;
  • disturbances in the hormonal balance of the skin.

When the immune system begins to cope worse with its direct responsibilities, the above factors become the cause of increased sebum production. Excess nutrient material is a good help for the rapid proliferation of subcutaneous mites.

When there are too many parasites, they have to get out of the follicles and glands, which they do by eating passages to the upper layers of the epithelium. This, in turn, is expressed in symptoms of dermatological damage, mainly on the face and in people with loose and soft skin.

Using Metronidazole for acne

Basically, this remedy is prescribed for the treatment of diseases occurring in the gastrointestinal tract, in particular those caused by Helicobacter pilori and anaerobic flora, which is resistant to many antibiotics, and some sexually transmitted infections. The use of Metronidazole to treat skin problems involves not only eliminating the problem in your intestines, but also in the tissues of the body. This substance has high bioavailability and penetrates into all fluids and tissues of the body. This should be remembered, especially for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The attending physician may prescribe a course that seems very short to you; this is done so that you can be sure of the effectiveness of the drug for you and see possible side effects. Also, if necessary, adjust the treatment program or discontinue the drug altogether. And if the drug is chosen correctly, and the cause of acne is a problem from the inside, then you will see the effect of the tablets on your skin within the first week.

Masks

Masks with metronidazole are an excellent remedy for acne on the face, which can remove inflammation in a few days and speed up the healing of your skin.

It should be noted that you should apply a mixture with this drug as a mask only if you have a large number of inflammations and acne per square centimeter of skin. This happens with acne or complications of rosacea and demodicosis. In the case of single pimples, it is necessary to apply the product pointwise.

With clay

To prepare this mask you will need:

  • Four tablets of trichopolum;
  • A few teaspoons of white or blue clay;
  • A little boiling water.

Now the tablets need to be finely ground and poured into a bowl, then pour boiling water over them and mix thoroughly. After this, pour clay into the resulting mixture until a thick consistency is obtained. Let this mixture brew for a while and cool so as not to burn your face, and you can safely apply it to your skin for 10 minutes.

We highly recommend not making this mask more than twice a week!

From peroxide and baby powder

To make such an effective mask you will need:

  • Two tablets of metronidazole or trichopolum;
  • Half a teaspoon of three percent hydrogen peroxide;
  • Half a teaspoon of baby powder;
  • Half a teaspoon of an alcohol solution of boric acid.

Now finely crush all the tablets and mix with baby powder. Then mix hydrogen peroxide and boric acid together and pour the resulting solution into the dry mixture, stirring gently to obtain a paste-like mass. Let this mixture sit for a few minutes and you can apply it directly to inflammation. ( specifically, not all over the face! )

If after application you notice a burning sensation on the skin, you should immediately wash the product off your face and not carry out this procedure again.

This means that your skin reacts strongly to the mixture of these ingredients. In the worst case scenario, it may even leave chemical burn marks on your skin. If everything is fine, then leave the mask on for ten minutes, and then carefully remove it with clean hands, rather than rinse it off. Wipe your face with lotion. And apply it every other day for several weeks.

Hydrogen peroxide

With aspirin

This mask will allow you to reduce the severity of inflammation on the skin and speed up its recovery. Because aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) present in the composition has an anti-inflammatory effect and makes pimples less noticeable.

"Metronidazole" for demodicosis - how the drug affects ticks, indications for use

Demodicosis is a disease that affects the skin (SC). It occurs due to the activation of a special mite that lives under the skin. The complexity of the disease is due to the fact that the parasite may not show signs of its presence for a long time. The drug Metronidazole is often used to treat the disease.

How it develops

Scientists have confirmed that the likelihood of the disease is not affected by a person’s age or gender. Most often, demodicosis develops on the face and head, since the cervix in these areas contains many sebaceous glands, the secretions of which serve as food for the mite.

Pathology occurs due to:

  • low immunity,
  • impaired sebum production,
  • the presence of skin diseases.

Often the person himself is to blame for infection with demodicosis. Self-removal of pimples, acne, ulcers and other formations helps the mite penetrate deep into the CP. Demodectic mange can also be a consequence of long-term use of antibiotics and steroid hormones, or the use of low-quality decorative cosmetics.

Bad habits and poor nutritional diet also contribute to the development of demodicosis.

Close contact with an infected person also leads to demodicosis. But this is only possible if the patient has more than 30 parasites in one sebaceous gland.

Important! Demodicosis also develops in pets. But its pathogens are completely safe for humans.

Symptoms of the disease

Often, signs of demodicosis appear on the head, nose, nasolabial triangle, forehead, cheeks, chin and eyelids, since it is in these places that sebum is produced in large quantities. Its amount increases if the patient’s body has disrupted hormonal levels, the functionality of internal organs or immunity.

Many dermatologists agree that the main symptom of demodicosis is the appearance of rosacea (rosacea) on the skin. A person may suffer from persistent skin hyperemia, pink papules, and pustules.

The advanced stage of the disease is manifested by compaction of the KP and spider veins. The patient begins to complain of severe itching and a feeling of tightening of the joint. Lack of adequate therapy leads to the development of rhinophyma.

The intensity of the manifestation of symptoms is enhanced by an oily KP and enlarged pores.

In elderly people, in addition to the above symptoms, ocular demodicosis develops, manifested by blepharoconjunctivitis and blepharitis. They suffer from dry eyes, foreign body sensation, redness, and watery eyes. Gradually, the eyelids begin to itch, swell, and turn red. Eyelashes become thin and brittle and quickly fall out. In the morning, the edges of the eyelids are covered with sticky discharge, crusts and scales.

How does it work?

Metronidazole is a drug with an antibiotic effect. It effectively copes with various bacterial diseases. Today the drug exists in the form of a gel, tablets and solution.

The first two dosage forms are more suitable for home use. One of the main advantages of Metronidazole is its active impact on the causes of demodicosis. The active ingredients penetrate bacterial elements and quickly destroy them.

Also, after using the drug, there are no scars left on the joint, which is very important.

The medication has a broad spectrum of action, so it is often used in dermatology. Low price, good effect and the possibility of use for the treatment of many skin diseases make Metronidazole a unique drug.

In what cases is it prescribed

In addition to demodicosis, the drug is prescribed against:

  • impaired functionality of the gastrointestinal tract,
  • hormonal disorders, especially in adolescents,
  • dermatosis, especially chronic.

Also, the drug and drugs created on its basis effectively cope with:

  • amoebic organ damage,
  • giardiasis of the duodenum,
  • abscesses affecting bones and soft tissues,
  • skin infections
  • inflammation of the periosteum and bone structures,
  • colitis,
  • infectious infections after surgery.

For people who need treatment for demodicosis, it is better to take Metronidazole orally (tablets) or use it externally (Metrogil gel). A qualified specialist should decide which dosage form is most suitable. At the same time, he takes into account the degree of damage and the individual characteristics of the patient.

Instructions for use

Metronidazole should be used only as prescribed by a doctor. He will study the degree of development of demodicosis and develop a treatment regimen. The patient must only comply with all instructions. Let's look at the features of using gels and tablets.

Features of gel treatment

Metrogyl is sold without a prescription in every pharmacy. It is transparent and odorless.

To achieve a good effect, the substance must be used to treat areas of the CP affected by demodicosis, previously cleaned of dust and dirt. The doctor decides how many times a day this procedure should be performed.

The treatment course takes 21-30 days. Its duration can be adjusted. The gel is easy to use and does not cause discomfort.

How to take the pills

Separately or as an addition to external use, the doctor may prescribe tableted Metronidazole. As a rule, you need to take 250 mg tablets in the morning and evening for 7-10 days.

This treatment is prescribed to patients in whom demodicosis has led to the development of serious internal inflammation.

But often the tablets can be used to prepare emulsions, masks and lotions for topical use.

Recipe 1

To create an effective homemade lotion, grind 5 tablets into powder, add 100 ml of water, mix well. Soak a cotton pad in the prepared mixture and apply it to the affected skin. Carry out the procedure twice a day.

Recipe 2

Mix crushed tablets and white clay in equal quantities, add water to make the mixture slightly thick, stir. Wash, pat your face with a dry towel and apply the mask to the affected areas for 15 minutes. Then rinse off.

The duration of such treatment should only be determined by a doctor. Using Metronidazole in any form as self-medication can negatively affect your health.

Contraindications, restrictions

Despite its high effectiveness, Metronidazole is prohibited for use when:

  • pregnancy and lactation,
  • acute renal and liver failure,
  • hypersensitivity to the constituent components,
  • impaired functionality of the central nervous system,
  • chronic blood diseases.

Also, the medication is prohibited for use in the treatment of children and adolescents.

Side effects, consequences

In general, Metronidazole is well tolerated, but in some patients its use was accompanied by:

  • redness of the CP,
  • severe itching and burning,
  • general weakness.

Overdose also exhibits the same symptoms. Taking a large dose of Metronidazole causes loss of orientation, convulsive damage to the limbs and deterioration of the patient’s general condition.

Analogs

If for some reason the patient cannot be treated with Metronidazole, the doctor should prescribe a substitute.

Why do you need to treat demodicosis?

Ignoring this disease will greatly aggravate the person’s condition and provoke the development of the following diseases.

Rosacea

The disease manifests itself as pustules, papules, rashes and skin inflammation. The face turns burgundy-red, the chest tightens, begins to itch and burn. Lack of adequate therapy will lead to thickening of the wings of the nose and an increase in its size. The disease can spread to the chest and back. The risk group includes fair-skinned women 30-50 years old.

Acne

It appears as flesh-colored nodules located in several groups on the face. May be accompanied by papules and pustules. A complex form of acne provokes the development of atrophic scars, bluish nodules and painful cysts. Acne most often appears on the cheeks, temples, upper back and chest. Black dots appear on the joint, it becomes lumpy, gradually becomes coarser and fatter.

Perioral dermatitis

It affects the nasolabial triangle, corners of the mouth, chin, head, and skin around the lips. It manifests itself as burgundy papules, persistent redness and pustules.

If left untreated, it enters an acute stage, which provokes the development of:

  • painful nodular neoplasms,
  • large pustules,
  • bluish rashes,
  • itching,
  • peeling,
  • dryness,
  • skin tightening.

Gradually, the KP becomes thin, opens the vascular network, and becomes covered with acne, pimples and rashes.

Seborrheic dermatitis

This disease manifests itself as pustules and papules that appear on the face, head, eyelids and eyebrows. Having become chronic, it affects:

  • chest,
  • armpits,
  • groin,
  • skin behind the ears.

A mild form of the disease can be confused with dandruff.

If left untreated, large scaly growths will affect the entire head. The KP under the crusts is red and inflamed. Since the skin is dry, bleeding microcracks appear on it, which constantly itch. The likelihood of contracting an infectious disease increases several times.

Demodicosis is a serious disease that requires qualified treatment. If you notice signs in yourself, do not rush to buy Metronidazole, but make an appointment with a dermatologist.

Doxycycline capsules

Properties of the medicine

The drug "Metronidazole" for acne is very effective. It is also active against gram-negative and some gram-positive anaerobes. In combination with the antibiotic Amoxicillin, this drug is highly effective against Hlicobacter pylori. It should be noted that facultative anaerobes and aerobic microorganisms are not sensitive to metronidazole, however, in the presence of mixed flora, it acts synergistically with antibiotics that are effective against common aerobes.

The agent in question increases the sensitivity of tumors to radiation, and also causes sensitization to alcohol and stimulates reparative processes.

Reviews

We invite you to read the reviews of my friends who used metronidazole for acne on the recommendation of a doctor or on their own, and if you have any questions, you can always ask your question on our cosmetic forum.

Dermatologist Tatyana Landysheva prescribed me Metronidazole as a complex therapy for acne. I suffered from severe rashes for unknown reasons. I had blood tests and skin scrapings, but everything was fine. Then the doctor adjusted my diet and prescribed these pills in a weekly course. And Baziron, spot on and at night. I would like to note that a year has passed since the course of treatment, but no new, extensive rashes have appeared on my skin. Only occasionally single pimples, which I smear with baziron and they quickly go away.

Marina, 27 years old, Moscow

I use trichopolum as a component for mash. I make my own mash from calendula and aspirin. I take a bottle of pharmacy calendula tincture, add three aspirin tablets and four trichopolum tablets to it. I wipe the affected areas before going to bed, the effect is simply wonderful. Pimples quickly dry out and decrease in size, sometimes it doesn’t even reach full-fledged inflammation.

Olga, 24 years old, Odintsovo

I use metronidazole in combination with clindamycin when I need to get rid of a pimple in an “inconvenient place” after depilation or sugaring in a few days. I crush the tablet of this product and pour clindamycin out of the pill, add a teaspoon of warm water. I mix it with my finger, dip a cotton ball into it and apply it to the pimple, cover it with a band-aid on top and leave it overnight. In the morning the inflammation becomes much less. I would like to note that be careful what kind of plaster you use, since a plaster with a high fixation force can leave severe irritation after tearing off. I use Bintley-M, it holds well and is easily removed without leaving any traces of glue or irritation.

Victoria, 32 years old, Moscow

Application of ointment

Metronidazole facial ointment for acne is applied externally. It should be applied to problem areas of the skin twice or thrice a day. Before starting the procedure, be sure to study the instructions and act according to them.

Ointment or gel is best applied to the skin in the morning after washing and at night before bed after hygiene procedures. The drug should not be rubbed in. Metronidazole ointment is quickly absorbed and does not cause discomfort. The drug does not leave any traces upon contact with clothing. The ointment should be applied to dry skin.

The effect of Metronidazole is noticeable after two weeks of treatment. Disgusting pimples dry out, the inflammatory process decreases and disappears from the skin. The functioning of the sebaceous glands returns to normal, which is why acne no longer appears.
