The ideal cosmetic bag: how to use thermal water and in what cases is it harmful?

Recently, thermal water has become a very popular cosmetic product. It is used not only for performing health procedures for the body, but also as a means of preserving the beauty and youth of facial skin. The main task of thermal water is to intensively moisturize the skin, fill it with mineral salts and vitamins, protect the epidermis from external negativity, and give makeup durability and freshness.

  • What is thermal water

    The positive effect of this product on facial skin is explained by its composition. Thermal water, like mineral water, is extracted from underground sources. But unlike the latter, it arrives at the surface already warm. At temperatures of +20 degrees and above, minerals beneficial to the skin are retained in the water in the required concentration, which, when used regularly, activate metabolic processes at the cellular level, stimulate regeneration and improve immunity.

    The springs from which thermal water is obtained lie at great depths. This is a guarantee of protection against chemical contamination. Therefore, thermal water is much superior in purity to mineral water.

    The composition of this useful liquid is largely influenced by the place where it is mined and the temperature at which it comes to the surface. Thermal water is divided into several categories depending on which minerals predominate in it and what their concentration is.

    Varieties:

    Type of thermal waterDescriptionManufacturers
    IsotonicIt has a neutral composition and is rich in minerals; its composition is similar to the intercellular fluid. It has a soothing and relieving effect on the skin. Unlike other types of thermal water, its excess does not need to be removed with napkins Uriage, Cora
    HypertensiveContains a large amount of salts of the sodium carbonate group. Suitable for eliminating a variety of inflammatory processes, treating acne and acne. Well soothes the skin and eliminates redness Vichy, Bioderma
    HypotonicContains a small concentration of mineral components. Ideal for dry skin types. Has an anti-inflammatory effect Avene
    SulphurousContains high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide. Suitable for eliminating oily shine, helping treat dermatitis Frais Monde
    Selenium-containingEnriched with selenium, which protects the skin from the effects of free radicals, is suitable for healing sunburn, prevents early aging and the formation of wrinklesLa Roche Posay

    The main benefit of thermal water for facial skin is that it is a completely natural product containing valuable substances in high concentrations. It is needed in the following cases:

    • to eliminate excess dry skin after being on the beach or in the solarium, thoroughly moisturizing and protecting from ultraviolet radiation;
    • for protection from low temperatures and wind;
    • for smoothing the skin before using decorative cosmetics and after completing makeup to maintain its freshness;
    • to activate blood microcirculation and improve oxygen supply to cells, which leads to renewal and rejuvenation of the epidermis;
    • to remove excess sebum and eliminate oily sheen;
    • for the treatment of acne, acne and other rashes with regular use;
    • for improving complexion due to the high content of nutrients.

    How to choose the right one

    Thermal water is a skin care cosmetic product, so when choosing a specific brand, it is necessary to take into account the type of skin, its condition and existing dermatological problems.

    If a woman has normal skin or tends to be dry, she should choose isotonic water. It is neutral towards skin cells, as it has a similar concentration of mineral salts and does not change their size. This product has a good moisturizing effect and protects against inflammation and peeling.

    Hypertonic water is suitable for oily and combination skin types. It soothes and relieves inflammation, treats acne and acne. With the help of hypertonic water, you can normalize the pH balance, protect the skin from the aggressive influence of external factors and strengthen local immunity.

    Selenium-containing thermal liquid is suitable for sensitive skin. This mineral normalizes the physiological balance of the skin and reduces sensitivity with regular use. As a result of using such thermal water, swelling decreases, irritation and itching disappear, the skin becomes hydrated and rejuvenated.

    For irritated and too dry dermis, the hypotonic variety should be used. This product has a very delicate effect, moisturizes and soothes well.

    In specialized stores, women sometimes get dizzy from the abundance of jars and bottles. Among them there are products that can and should be used in the summer - water to moisturize the skin.

    How to choose it correctly and what to use it for? I figured this out with the help of the cosmetologist “Lady Expert”. First, let's define the types of cosmetic water. There are three of them so far:

    1. thermal;
    2. micellar;
    3. floral.

    Each of them is designed to perform specific functions. Let's take a closer look at them.

    Thermal water

    Imagine, this cosmetic product is extracted for you straight from the ground!

    Fights dryness and signs of fatigue, perfectly moisturizes and tones. Due to this, complexion and protective properties of the skin are improved, and the water-lipid balance is normalized.

    You can use thermal water at any time of the year when you want to refresh yourself. This can be done any number of times during the day - there are no restrictions on the use of the cosmetic product.

    Usually thermal water is produced in bottles equipped with sprayers. Just spray your face from a distance of 30-40 cm, and then let the skin dry or blot it with a napkin after 30 seconds. The cosmetologist claims that there is no need to worry about your makeup: thermal water does not wash it off, but on the contrary, it fixes it. It is good to moisturize your face in this way in the morning and evening before applying the cream. Nutrients from cosmetic products are absorbed by moisturized skin much more effectively.

    The composition of thermal water depends on the source from which it was obtained. Each of them contains a unique complex of useful salts, macro- and microelements. Which cosmetic product to choose to moisturize your facial skin depends only on its type. You need to select the optimal water individually. The cosmetologist advises using a product with the highest content of mineral salts for oily skin, and with a minimum content for dry skin. If in doubt, buy isotonic thermal water - it is considered universal and neutral for the skin.

    Micellar water

    Created specifically for makeup removal. Does not change the natural acid balance (pH) of the skin and its top layer. Successfully copes with the most persistent cosmetics without leaving any traces.

    It is best to use micellar water 2 times a day before applying a cream or mask on all areas of the face without exception. If after cleansing with this cosmetic you still feel tight or sticky, rinse your face with regular warm water.

    This is what you need for washing if regular tap water doesn’t suit you

    Micellar water is simply irreplaceable when traveling, for women with sensitive skin that reacts to climate change and is prone to breakouts. After this cosmetic product, any cream is absorbed much faster.

    Initially, micellar water was developed specifically for people with severe skin diseases, problematic or very sensitive skin. But over time, this cosmetic product began to be used more widely, and now cosmetologists recommend it to absolutely all women.

    Flower water

    If you like herbal cosmetics, this product is ideal. Flower water is formed during the production of essential oils, a kind of by-product of production. Cosmetologists tried to use it as a therapeutic agent and were pleasantly surprised by the effect!

    Flower water comes in a variety of herbal flavors – choose to suit your taste!

    This magical water is based on particles of essential oils and plant extracts. The effect is achieved precisely due to them. As a rule, manufacturers do not combine flower water, but produce it based on a single plant, which differ in acidity level. Therefore, you need to select a cosmetic product based on your skin type:

    • for normal, chamomile, orange, linden, rose flowers are ideal;
    • dry and sensitive, geranium, rose, lemon balm are indicated;
    • cornflower, verbena, and witch hazel will help oily and combination skin types;
    • For mature ones, chamomile flowers and angelica root are good.

    You need to apply flower water using a spray bottle. Just spray your face with cosmetic product from time to time. But this should be done no more than 12 times a day. In addition to the cosmetic effect, this product also has a unique aroma. If you always carry it with you, wearing perfume is no longer necessary in the hot summer.

    However, be careful with flower water if you are allergic to any plants. It is also highly undesirable for pregnant women to use it.

    As you can see, the beauty industry does not stand still. If for some reason ordinary tap water is not suitable for you, it can be successfully replaced with any of the above analogues.

    How to use

    Thermal water is a universal skin care product and has a wide range of uses. It is important to use this product correctly for maximum effectiveness.

    To moisturize the skin, the product can be used periodically throughout the day. To do this you need to follow a few simple steps:

    1. Spray thermal water slightly upward from your face.
    2. Place your face in the tiny droplets.
    3. Wait a few seconds for the liquid particles to settle on the surface of the skin.
    4. If necessary, blot off excess moisture with a napkin.

    This application of thermal water has a delicate effect. Therefore, this method can be used not only to moisturize clean skin, but also to fix makeup. It is especially recommended to carry out such procedures during the day when you are in rooms with very dry air, when air conditioning or central heating is running.

    To tone and normalize the acid-base balance, spraying must be done in a different way:

    1. Close your eyes and spray thermal water onto your previously cleansed face for 2 seconds.
    2. Wait 30 seconds for the moisture to be absorbed.
    3. Blot excess liquid with a napkin.

    Precautionary measures

    Although thermal water is a delicate product, there are several rules that, if followed, will help avoid negative consequences from its use.

    List of main prohibitions:

    • Do not leave excess moisture on your face after spraying thermal water. The product draws moisture from the skin as it evaporates, although this happens very slowly. Therefore, be sure to blot the remaining product with a napkin. The exception is isotonic thermal water; it does not need to be removed from the face.
    • Do not spray the product in direct sunlight, as its drops will act as a magnifying glass, which increases the likelihood of getting a microscopic sunburn and premature aging of the skin.
    • There is no need to shake the can before spraying. This increases gas consumption and leads to wasted product consumption.

    The ideal cosmetic bag: how to use thermal water and in what cases is it harmful?

    The heat in the city pushes us to any way to freshen up. Right now, when the thermometer exceeds +28, many people have a bottle of thermal water at hand.

    Personally in my car

    There is always a bottle of thermal water. Just in case. Correct your makeup, refresh your face, spray on your hands.

    Many of my colleagues keep a bottle of thermal water on their office table and use it all year round. Thermal water is a frequent companion of those who fly on an airplane. But most of all I was surprised by the young Italian women who, in the heat on the beach, generously doused themselves with thermal water. The latter prompted me to find out whether we were doing everything right and whether thermal water was so harmless. I turned to an expert named Tiina Orasmäe-Meder . She is a cosmetologist, developer of the professional skin care line Meder Beauty Science (Switzerland), editor-in-chief of the magazine “Cosmetics”:

    “Thermal water is mineral water obtained from thermal springs. Usually it comes from a fairly great depth, from underground reservoirs, where it is heated due to the geothermal and volcanic activity of the Earth. Thermal springs can vary greatly, primarily in the composition of salts that are dissolved in the water. It is the salts that determine the biological activity of thermal water and how it will act on the skin,” says Tiina.

    And, indeed, on the official Avene website there is a special classification based on the presence of minerals in thermal water:

    • Water with very low mineralization: less than 50 mg/l
    • Water with low mineralization: from 50 to 500 mg/l
    • Water with medium mineralization: from 500 to 1500 mg/l
    • Water with a very high content of mineral salts: more than 1500 mg/l
    • Water can be regular or sparkling

    La Roche-Posay thermal water for sensitive skin 2. Avene Vichy mineralized thermal water

    And Tiina Orasmäe-Meder continues: “Among the most popular types of thermal water, which are easy to find in pharmacies, the most minerals are contained in Uriage , and the least (almost 55 times less) are in Avene . Vichy water is also highly concentrated, although it contains 2 times less minerals than Uriage, and La Roche-Posay is much closer in mineral composition to Avene.

    Avene and Vichy are the most comfortable to use and have a calming effect, while La Roche Posay in its studies reports a positive effect of reducing irritation when in contact with chemicals, as well as improving skin condition in patients with psoriasis who regularly used thermal water.

    It's not that simple with Uriage water. It is very rich in calcium, magnesium, sulfur salts and selenium and is supposed to have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, however, it can be an irritant for thin and sensitive skin.”

    New generation products - mists (lotion-spray) . They are also based on mineral or ordinary purified water, enriched with essential oils, plant extracts of medicinal herbs, and glycerin. The task of mists is the same as that of thermal water - to moisturize, soften, refresh the skin, plus they have a pleasant aroma. There are also fixing sprays that are used as the final stage of make-up . They make makeup more durable, preventing it from spreading in the heat or smearing from touching the face. And they can also refresh your makeup throughout the day.

    About benefits and more

    According to our expert, almost any thermal water has a moisturizing effect: the saline solution retains moisture in the upper layers of the skin, acting like a magnet. However, the moisturizing effect will be most pronounced if the surface of the skin does not dry out. If evaporation from the surface occurs quickly, then after the first feeling of comfort and softening of the skin, a feeling of tightness and dryness may occur, which some perceive as a signal to “spray a little more water.” On the beach, for example, thermal water applied in the open sun can worsen the situation, since the drops in this case act as a kind of lenses, increasing the damaging effects of sunlight . If you use thermal water on the beach, be sure to apply sunscreen to your skin after spraying.

    Thermal water, according to our expert, is not a panacea and is a completely optional part of daily care. It makes sense to use it as an additional remedy for dry or hypersensitive skin, when it is not possible to cope with conventional measures . And an important point - thermal water must be applied to previously cleansed skin. The exception is when you fix makeup, but for this you can also use ordinary water, not necessarily thermal water.

    10 cases when it is useful to use thermal water:

    1. For moisturizing : Thermal water can be applied to cleansed skin as an additional moisturizer, after which it is recommended to apply a protective or nourishing cream that will prevent water from evaporating from the surface.
    2. To soften : Thermal water can be mixed with your cream, this is what dermatologists recommend doing for patients suffering from atopic dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis.
    3. For comfort : Some types of thermal water (particularly Avene) can be used to reduce flaking and discomfort when treating acne with retinoid medications.
    4. To set makeup : Thermal water can be used to set makeup by simply spritzing it on top and then applying a little loose powder to slightly damp skin.
    5. To relieve fatigue : Thermal water is good for relieving irritation from computer-tired eyes - moisten two cotton pads with water, place them on your closed eyes and sprinkle water on top again. This maneuver perfectly tones the skin and improves blood microcirculation in its cells, erasing dark circles under the eyes and helping to relieve puffiness. Leave for 5-10 minutes.
    6. Against skin irritation : This is a great SOS remedy when the skin is inflamed and irritated. Sprinkle water on a cosmetic napkin, straighten it and spread it on your face for 5 minutes. The redness usually disappears.
    7. After shaving : Thermal water can be an addition to after-shave for men: just immediately after shaving, spray water on the skin and after 3 minutes blot your face with a cosmetic napkin, and only then use aftershave balm or lotion.
    8. After epilation : Thermal water perfectly soothes the skin after epilation.
    9. During the holidays : In case of sunburn, thermal water relieves inflammation and, thanks to the soothing and healing microelements included in the composition, promotes rapid recovery - spray it on reddened skin and do not forget to apply after-sun product afterwards.
    10. For cleansing : Thermal water can be used to remove makeup and cleanse the skin when there is no special cleanser at hand.

    How to make thermal water yourself

    Now this cosmetic product is very easy to buy in any store, but if you wish, you can prepare it yourself. The advantage of a homemade product is that you can be sure of its naturalness and the absence of harmful components.

    The easiest way involves using good quality mineral water, for example “Essentuki No. 17”. You need to leave the bottle open overnight so that gas and all harmful substances come out of the liquid. The next morning, it should be poured into a bottle with a spray bottle and used as directed.

    If homemade thermal water will be sprayed over makeup, you need to choose a spray bottle with small holes so that the liquid is distributed in the form of wet dust and not droplets.
