Glycerin: composition
The element glycerol is a trihydric alcohol with the chemical formula C3H5(OH)3. The liquid consistency of glycerin characterizes its viscosity; the liquid is transparent and very hygroscopic.
It has a sweet taste and includes the following components:
- Hydrogen – 8.756%.
- Carbon – 39.125%.
- Oxygen – 52.119%.
When making homemade creams, glycerin mixed with water allows you to achieve good skin hydration. To get the desired effect, you must choose pure distilled water for recipes.
It is also very useful to mix glycerin with other healing components that have a moisturizing effect, additional nutrition, etc.
Benefits of glycerin for facial skin
Glycerin has the following beneficial properties:
- Moisturizes. Thanks to its chemical composition, the liquid adsorbs moisture and attracts it to the skin.
- Eliminates age and expression wrinkles. Systematic use of glycerin-based creams helps get rid of dryness and eliminate dehydration. Glycerin will fill skin folds and wrinkles with adsorbed moisture, due to which the epidermis is smoothed.
- Whitens the skin, improves softness, gives a feeling of tenderness and velvety.
- Copes with some skin diseases. Thanks to the antiseptic properties of glycerin, it promotes wound healing, removes acne, and prevents the inflammatory process on the skin.
- Face cream with glycerin carefully creates a film on the upper layer of the epidermis, protecting the skin from dirt, dust and the negative effects of environmental factors.
- Cleanses the skin. Glycerin improves metabolic processes on the skin, eliminates dirt, dust, and grease.
- Nourishes and moisturizes the epidermis, fills cells with oxygen. Due to its ability to penetrate the epidermis, glycerin transports nutrients to the deep layers.
Due to its unique properties, glycerin is considered a panacea for age-related skin changes. Systematically using this component, the tissues are noticeably smoothed and tightened.

Possible harm and contraindications
Despite the impressive list of healing properties, glycerin is a relatively specific substance that, if used incorrectly, can harm health and worsen the condition of the skin.
Adverse effects of glycerin:
- Draws out fluid from the deep layers of the epidermis. If the proportions in the manufacture of homemade creams are not observed, glycerin takes moisture from the skin, drying it out. Therefore, it is important to follow the instructions and recipe for use, and also carry out procedures in a room with high humidity.
- If the recipe for preparing face creams based on glycerin is not followed, a sticky film appears on the skin, which stimulates the formation of oily spots and tightness. Therefore, before leaving home, it is recommended to use glycerin cream minimally.
- Without following the application regimen, glycerin can lighten the skin too much by washing out melanin (natural pigment).
Contraindications to the use of glycerin:
- Face cream with glycerin for hypersensitive skin can become a problem - it can aggravate the course of skin diseases and cause the appearance of comedones.
- It is strictly not recommended to combine glycerin with silicone. This can cause burning, peeling, and itching.
- If you are hypersensitive to one of the components, cream with glycerin can provoke an allergic reaction, causing swelling and burning.
It is important to remember that in order to prevent any negative manifestations from homemade creams, it is necessary to apply the resulting composition to the crook of the elbow or wrist. And then observe the reaction for 15 minutes.
There is still debate about the beneficial and unfavorable properties of glycerin. When using it as a component of a homemade cream, you need to consider all the pros and cons.
Even when diluting glycerin with water and other ingredients, the cream should be used in rooms with humidity above 60%. Use glycerin with caution in hot weather and in heated rooms. In any self-prepared cream, the glycerin content should not exceed 7%.
Unique properties and risks
Many cosmetics contain glycerin. This component is even contained in preparations intended to care for the skin around the eyes, which is highly dry and sensitive. There is nothing surprising. Glycerin is a good humectant. And this is an axiom.
Glycerin is in great demand in anti-aging cosmetics. And if you use colorless alcohol in acceptable doses, taking into account all the rules, then it will bring invaluable benefits to aging skin. Cosmetologists claim that a face mask made of glycerin at home can provide several beneficial effects at once.
- Moisturizes the dermis. The triatomic product absorbs (absorbs) moisture from the environment. Penetrating into the cells of the dermis, it releases accumulated moisture, thereby providing good hydration.
- Protects skin. Glycerin reacts chemically with water molecules. This leads to the formation of a thin layer on the face that protects the dermis from pathogenic microorganisms and the aggressive influence of the environment.
- Smoothes out wrinkles. Water deficiency in the dermis leads to skin dehydration and early aging. Glycerin, which has the ability to absorb water and release it to cells, perfectly restores hydrobalance in the epidermis and thereby smooths out wrinkles.
- Nourishes the skin. The triatomic product ensures the penetration of all the beneficial substances of the mask into the deep layers of the epidermis. The aging dermis receives effective nutrition, making rejuvenation more intense.
Can glycerin cause harm to the skin? The pharmaceutical product is an alcohol, so it cannot be a source of moisture. It perfectly draws water from the environment. But if the air in the room is dry, then glycerin has nowhere to get moisture and it begins to absorb it from the dermis, gradually dehydrating the integument.
How to choose an industrial face cream with glycerin
When choosing a branded or inexpensive cream with glycerin, it is important to study its composition and pay attention to the glycerin content. Otherwise, the cream may cause excessive dryness and flaking of the skin.
If the amount of glycerin is not written on the label, you need to pay attention to its place in the list of ingredients. If it is at the very beginning of the list, its concentration is quite high. The closer to the end of the list glycerin is located, the lower its percentage in the cream.
When choosing a night or day cream, you should also pay attention to the amount of glycerin. For a nighttime formulation, glycerin should be kept to a minimum. This is due to the fact that in the dark the skin tries to get rid of excess toxins and waste, thus self-cleansing occurs.
Glycerin covers the skin with a film that blocks the release of harmful substances and excess moisture. Due to this, swelling and swelling may appear in the morning.
Cosmetologists' opinions
Cosmetologists say that glycerin is one of the most affordable face and body care products. However, they warn against using it undiluted, since in hot and dry air conditions this can lead to the removal of natural moisture from the skin. According to them, glycerin must be combined with oils or capsule vitamins.

Practical advice
Before moving on to traditional recipes, it is worth familiarizing yourself with some practical tips for hand care that will help avoid dry skin.
Try to regularly use rubber or silicone gloves when doing household work. This especially applies to the effects of harmful cosmetics and household chemicals on the skin. If possible, try to wear gloves even when washing dishes. To prevent your hands from sweating, you should sprinkle unscented or chamomile-based baby powder into the cavity of your gloves.
- Hypothermia is the main enemy of skin tenderness. As a rule, these include: wind with snow or rain, frosty air, exposure to ice. In such weather, it is recommended to wear mittens or wool gloves. If there is heavy rain outside, then you should use waterproof leather gloves.
- When washing your hands, it is recommended to select toilet soap taking into account your skin’s pH balance. The ideal option would be Dove products, which consist of ¼ moisturizing creams, and the soap contains many natural ingredients. During washing, you must also monitor the water temperature. The water should not be too cold or, on the contrary, hot.
- Hygiene standards should also be observed. Most people forget to wash their hands after coming home from the street. This error is simply unacceptable. Bacteria that are inaccessible to our eyes can cause dry skin. To wash your hands, it is also recommended to purchase a special brush, as well as a nail spatula, with which all remaining dirt is removed.
- Buy some hand sanitizer at the supermarket or pharmacy. Most often they are produced in 100 ml bottles. This product must be carried with you in your purse at all times, using it after leaving public transport, the entrance, the supermarket, and so on. You just need to squeeze out one drop of gel and rub it with your palms. At first, the smell of alcohol will be felt, but after a while the palms will be moisturized with the oils and esters that make up the antiseptic.
- You need to pay special attention to your manicure. Try to eliminate existing calluses in a timely manner, tidy up your cuticles and remove dead particles. These procedures will make the skin of your hands very soft. In combination, it is recommended to massage using nourishing hand cream. Manicures should be done at least twice a month.
- Few people know that dry air has a negative effect on the general condition of the epidermis. That is why it is recommended to purchase an air humidifier for your apartment or office. If you do not have this opportunity, then you can do differently. Place a simple pan of water on the heating device, add 3 ml of any essential oil to it and just wait for the liquid to evaporate.

What you will need
Before we provide you with a master class with effective hand cream recipes, we will dwell in more detail on the selection of suitable ingredients. The basis of the product can be absolutely any product, for example:
- beeswax - perfect for moisturizing and nourishing cream;
- cosmetic oils, which can have a liquid consistency (olive, almond, corn, etc.) or solid (cocoa, coconut, shea, butter), coconut oil is more often used for hair;
- pork fat - has nutritional properties, in emergency cases it is used when the skin of the hands is very chapped and rough;
- butter – improves tone and softens the skin of the hands.
In addition, hand cream often contains lecithin and lanolin. Lanolin has pronounced softening, tonic, and moisturizing properties. Having dealt with the main components, you can move on to the individual ones. Among the latter, there are various additives - essential and base oils, plant juices, herbal decoctions, which are selected individually, based on the personal needs of your skin. You can find out about Nitrogin hand cream here.
Basic video tutorial on home cream making
- Hygroscopicity. Molecules of the substance absorb and accumulate moisture. Due to their small size, they penetrate deep into the skin and help saturate all its layers with water;
- An important component of the epidermis. It is unlikely that opponents of glycerin know that the substance is produced by the cells of the human body. Glycerol is an active participant in the internal water circulation system in cell membranes. If for some reason the body’s production of a substance has decreased, then a cosmetic product containing it will help replenish the missing moisture;
- Protective function. Due to its ability to fill small wrinkles and microcracks with moisture, the substance prevents dust particles and microorganisms from entering the upper skin layers, thereby protecting the epidermis from inflammation and irritation. Also, glycerin-containing products are endowed with the ability to protect the skin from penetration of irritating substances (for example, sodium lauryl sulfate).

With vitamin E
You can improve the effectiveness of a cream with glycerin by adding vitamin E to it. This product will refresh the skin, smooth out wrinkles, and add smoothness to the skin. It will also moisturize and nourish it.
To do this, you need to prepare the following substances:
- Glycerin – 1 tbsp. l.
- Vitamin E - 1 tbsp. l.
Combine all prepared ingredients in one container and grind thoroughly. If the cream is to be applied in the cold season or in a cool room, it is recommended to add 1/2 tsp. distilled water.
The most popular face cream is glycerin with vitamin E.
The cream should be applied to a face free of dust and cosmetics, left for an hour, remove excess with a damp cloth or rinse with water. It is better to reduce the time of the first procedure to 40 minutes. After it, it is better to apply a tonic lotion. Repeat the procedure 4 times a week for 21 days. Then take a break for 1-2 weeks and repeat cosmetic procedures.
Many girls do not appreciate the full impact of homemade creams containing glycerin, since they use them for a short time.
But it is important to take into account that it takes time to improve the condition of the skin and restore the former beauty and charm of the facial skin.
Recipes
As already mentioned, glycerin cannot be applied in its pure form. There are different recipes for cosmetic formulations using this product. When choosing an option, consider your skin type. If the recipe does not indicate the amount of glycerin, then you need to pour in one teaspoon.
Rejuvenation and toning
To prepare the composition you will need a citrus fruit. If you have combination or normal skin, you should take an orange or grapefruit; for very oily skin, use lemon.
We clean the fruit, removing not only the peel, but also the internal partitions and seeds. Grind half an orange or lemon with a spoon (take a medium-sized fruit). Place in a glass bowl and add 100 ml of cold water. Cover the container with this mixture and put it in the refrigerator for a week. Then filter and squeeze out the sediment. Add glycerin to the resulting liquid and shake well.
Apply several layers. As soon as the first layer dries a little, apply the next layer using a cotton swab.
Against wrinkles and sagging
This mask literally erases the first signs of aging from the face. To prepare, you will need an infusion of chamomile, as well as high-quality (preferably rustic) butter, an egg, liquid honey and, of course, glycerin.
Let's start cooking: separate the yolk from the white, grind the yolk with liquid honey and soft butter. Then add glycerin to about 10 ml of warm chamomile infusion.
Rejuvenation and nutrition
To make this anti-aging composition you will need potatoes. It is necessary to boil one medium-sized root vegetable in its peel. Cool slightly and mash while still warm. Then add the yolk, a little milk and unrefined vegetable oil (about a tablespoon of both), and glycerin. Beat everything and apply to prepared skin. After a quarter of an hour, rinse with water.
Effective hydration
Mix the yolk with glycerin and a couple of tablespoons of milk. Beat until smooth. Apply to damp skin for 20 minutes, rinse with warm water.
Whitening
If you have age spots, the following composition with lemon will help. You need to slightly heat a couple of spoons of honey until it becomes liquid. Add glycerin and a tablespoon of freshly prepared lemon juice. Apply to clean, damp skin for 20 minutes.
Effective rejuvenation
To carry out the procedure, you will need a bottle of glycerin (product weight 25 grams), as well as an oil solution of vitamin E in capsules (10 pcs.) The capsules must be pierced and their contents poured into a bottle with glycerin. Shake well.
This composition is applied to the face for 20 minutes, removed with wet wipes. This composition with vitamin E is also suitable for application to the skin under the eyes.
Similarly, you can prepare a cosmetic composition with vitamin A. In this case, the procedure will be aimed at cell regeneration and renewal. You can alternate masks with vitamins, or use the ready-made pharmaceutical preparation Aevit, which contains both types of vitamins.
A softer version of the mask with vitamins is recommended as a preventive measure and to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. Add 100 ml of chamomile infusion, as well as two teaspoons of castor oil, to the mixture with glycerin and vitamins. The mixture should be shaken well.
Pull-up
A cosmetic composition with glycerin and gelatin will help maintain skin elasticity. Pour two teaspoons of gelatin into a third glass of cold water. After the gelatin crystals swell, the mixture is heated with stirring to ensure complete dissolution. It is important not to let the solution boil. Then add a large spoonful of honey and the same amount of glycerin to the mixture. Stir everything and cool.
Refreshing
This composition is “multifunctional”; it perfectly smooths out wrinkles, tightens the skin, eliminates dryness and removes dark circles under the eyes. We prepare oatmeal with milk or cream from Hercules flakes, as usual, but without adding sugar and salt. For a tablespoon of prepared warm porridge, take a teaspoon of glycerin and one yolk. Mix everything well and apply it to the face, including the area under the eyes.
Eliminate dryness
This composition is ideal for dry skin and can be applied to the face, lower eyelids, neck and décolleté. It contains only two components – castor oil and glycerin. They need to be mixed, taking twice as much oil. You can enrich the composition by adding a couple of drops of any essential oil, myrtle is especially recommended.
Regeneration and nutrition
To prepare this composition you will need fresh aloe juice. You can prepare it yourself if you have this useful plant growing on your windowsill. In order for the juice to contain a larger amount of biologically active substances, you need to:
- do not water the plant for a week, and only after that cut off the leaves;
- use leaves of an adult plant (at least three years old) and only the lowest and largest ones;
- Keep the cut sheets for a week in the refrigerator, wrapped in paper.
The prepared juice is mixed with glycerin in equal proportions. Apply to damp skin for 20 minutes.
To remove oily shine
With hyperfunction of the sebaceous glands, the skin looks as if it has been smeared with oil. To make a medicinal composition, you need to prepare dry birch buds yourself or buy them at a pharmacy. Prepare a decoction at the rate of a spoonful of dry raw materials per 100 ml of water, boil the decoction for 5 minutes on low heat. Then turn off the stove, cover the dish with a lid and wrap it in a blanket or pour it into a thermos. After 12 hours, strain, mix with green clay to make a creamy slurry, add glycerin, stir.
If your skin is not just oily, but also prone to pimples, then you should add two drops of salicylic alcohol to the prepared composition.
To improve complexion
The preparation of this composition must begin in advance. You will need wheat grains, which need to be wrapped in damp gauze for germination. Until the sprouts appear, you will need to ensure that the gauze remains moist.
A teaspoon of sprouted grains must be ground in a blender or coffee grinder. Mix with yolk and a spoon of honey. To this composition add glycerin and a few camels, squeezed lemon juice. This mask perfectly refreshes, fights age-related changes, and relieves irritation.
Anti-wrinkle cream with glycerin
Women begin to wonder about eliminating and smoothing out facial and age wrinkles from a young age. Homemade creams are safe and environmentally friendly, so they can be used after 25 years.
To prepare the composition you will need to prepare:
- Aloe juice – 25 g.
- Liquid glycerin – 25 g.
Combine the prepared ingredients and mix thoroughly. Apply the composition generously to clean facial skin for 20-30 minutes. After this, clean off the excess using a cloth soaked in warm water.
A simple, inexpensive composition allows you to eliminate wrinkles, smooth the skin, give it elasticity and firmness. A cream based on glycerin and aloe helps reduce the pigmentation of freckles, slightly whitening the skin.
After 1-2 procedures of use, the result will be visible, the skin will become much softer. After 2 months of use, the shine and radiance of the facial skin returns, it looks tightened and smooth.
Glycerin is one of the effective components of many time-tested creams. It attracts moisture to the skin, nourishing and saturating it, promotes rejuvenation, eliminates tightness and dehydration.
With the constant use of glycerin-based creams, you can protect the skin from the negative effects of environmental factors, get rid of pollution, pigmentation and pathogens.
Face cream with inexpensive, accessible glycerin is indispensable for home cosmetics. Thanks to its unique properties, the skin becomes elastic and the effect of smoothing out shallow wrinkles is guaranteed.
