The concentrate is rich in polyunsaturated fats, organic acids, vitamins, minerals, phytosterols and tannins. Due to this, it has anti-inflammatory, expectorant, antispasmodic, hypocholesterolemic and antioxidant effects on the human body.

For medicinal purposes, almond oil is used to treat bedsores, burns, anemia, constipation, atherosclerosis, bronchitis, neurosis, herpes and cholecystitis. Along with this, it is used in cooking, perfumery and cosmetology.

Characteristics and description

The history of almonds dates back more than 8,000 years. There is no exact information about where this plant came from. Most likely, its homeland is Central Asia or China, from where the culture reached the Mediterranean along the Great Silk Road. It looks like a small tree or shrub with few branches. Blooms soft pink. And what is considered an edible nut is actually the seed of a grey-green almond fruit.

Various ancient traditions and rituals are associated with the plant

  • residents of Sogdiana, a region in which modern Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are located, sacrificed flowering branches to the gods and protected children from evil spirits;
  • In ancient Egypt, almond oil was considered a symbol of material well-being. Pure concentrate was used for rituals designed to improve financial well-being; candles, money, etc. were smeared with it;
  • The first European country to which this plant came was Greece. Next was Rome, where the almond tree was nicknamed the “Greek nut.” The oily liquid obtained from it was used as a skin soothing agent and in the treatment of many ailments.

By the way. It is believed that almond oil was the favorite beauty product of Cleopatra, as well as Josephine, Napoleon’s wife.

The culture received Latin name Amygdalus in honor of the Phoenician goddess of beauty Amygdala. The delicate shade of her face resembled the petals of a flowering tree. Today, the word “amygdalin” is known as the toxic component of almonds. It is found in significant quantities in the bitter variety of the plant and is responsible for the characteristic almond taste and aroma. It is almost absent in the kernels of sweet fruits.

Oil is extracted from both varieties of the crop. In this case, be sure to indicate on the label what raw materials were used. The detailed differences between oily liquids are described below.

  • Bitter almond oil. Essential. It is subjected to heat treatment, which destroys the toxic component amygdalin. Not suitable for internal use. In its pure form it cannot be applied to the skin. Used in perfumery, less often for cosmetic purposes.
  • Sweet almond oil. Most often basic. If we are talking about a quality product, the raw materials are not processed using heat. If necessary, it is used for oral administration. It is used as an independent product, a basis for homemade masks, an additive to ready-made creams, lotions, etc.

It is not known for certain how the valuable liquid was obtained in ancient times. Now this happens by pressing almond kernels. The raw materials are first dried and ground. Cold pressing allows you to preserve the maximum amount of useful in the product .

The finished oil has a light yellow tint and sometimes has a pleasant nutty flavor and aroma. In the bitter variety of the extract, almond notes are more clearly felt.

What is almond oil

Almond oil is a squeeze from the nut of the same name. To produce the product, both bitter and sweet varieties of raw materials are used. Almonds grow on a bush. The latter can be found in the territory:

  • USA,
  • China,
  • Mediterranean countries,
  • Central Asia,
  • Caucasus.

Almond oil is made from nuts that grow on the almond bush.

The squeeze from almond kernels has a yellow tint and a barely perceptible sweet aroma. The taste of the oil is vaguely reminiscent of the nuts themselves. Interestingly, the product is obtained by cold pressing, which means that the squeeze retains all the beneficial properties of the kernels.

You should know that one of the components of bitter almond oil is cyanide. The latter is a component dangerous to the body. This is why sweet nut oil is commonly used for facial care purposes.

Almond extract is basic, which means it can be used separately for facial care, or as part of homemade cosmetic products:

  • masks,
