"Shoals" of Russian manufacturers
If you more or less read the ingredients of what you use, you probably noticed that sometimes Russian creams contain slightly strange ingredients - sometimes incomplete (only active ingredients), sometimes with atypical ingredients that are not in the official INCI database of cosmetic ingredients (for example, Cato), etc.
There are small features that Russian manufacturers suffer from:
- Incomplete formulations: The ingredient list either contains active ingredients that have nothing in common with the INCI ingredient list, or simply omits some ingredients from the formulation.
In the first case, it’s easier - you just look for either the complete INCI list (on the packaging or on the website, or directly ask the manufacturer).
In the second, it is more difficult - it is difficult to understand that the manufacturer did not agree on something if you do not understand the composition of cosmetics at all. But over time, this will come if you always pay attention to the composition and wonder why this or that ingredient is needed.
But in reality, the manufacturer is required to indicate the FULL composition according to INCI. And this is indicated in the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union “On the safety of perfumery and cosmetic products.”
- Collective names: emulsion wax, vegetable preservative, gel base, mixture of soft surfactants, etc. These are not entirely correct indications of the ingredients in the formulations. If this is a mixture of soft surfactants, then it should indicate which specific surfactants - Sodium Coco Sulfate, Glucoside, etc.
EXCEPTION: household chemicals. Here the manufacturer can write common names, for example, optical brightener or simply anionic surfactants. I spoke in VERY detail about the composition of household chemicals at the webinar Household chemicals - how dangerous can they be?
- Brand Names: Caton (a mixture of methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone), Phenochem (a mixture of Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Isobutylparaben and Phenoxyethanol), Cosgard (a mixture of Dehydroacetic Acid and Benzyl Alcohol), etc. Yes, the manufacturer CAN write what is included in Kathon, but must indicate in parentheses what it consists of.
How to recognize such names? Enter the suspicious ingredient into the Ekokosmetika database; if it is not there, then most likely it is the brand name of a mixture of several ingredients (usually preservatives).

The heating season is about to begin, and our skin will dry out intensely along with the “dehydrated” air. At this time, the demand for moisturizing creams increases sharply, which cosmetologists now advise to use not only women, but also men. Manufacturers promise maximum effect and convenience: apply it in the morning before going to work and the “unique hydration” will last “all day long”, or even for 24 hours! Moreover, equally generous promises are made both on tubes of cheap, budget creams and on packages of rather expensive moisturizing cosmetics. Is there a difference and do popular products work as effectively as the manufacturers claim? What about the safety and naturalness of creams?
To give competent answers to all these questions, Roskontrol specialists purchased six samples of moisturizing creams of different price categories for examination: from 50 to 1030 rubles.
Among the test participants was one Russian-made sample: the “Clean Line” moisturizing day cream for normal and combination skin (in Yekaterinburg). As well as a set of imported products that we most often see on store shelves:
— Nivea moisturizing day cream for normal and combination skin is a German product, however, it is not made in Germany, but in Poland;
- Olay day moisturizing gel-cream - a product from the facial care line of the American giant Procter & Gamble Co, also produced in Poland;
— emollient light cream “Vital Moisturizing” for normal and mixed skin Garnier — it is produced by the French company L`Oreal Paris, and according to the information on the packaging, it came to us directly from France;
— moisturizing gel-cream for normal and combination skin L`Oreal Paris (made in Germany);
- “a unique moisturizer” Clinique is a product of a subsidiary of the American giant Estee Lauder Companies, manufactured in Belgium, at one of the concern’s enterprises.

THE WEATHER THE SMELL, THE HIGHER THE QUALITY
First of all, experts checked the samples for organoleptic indicators: appearance, color, smell. The consistency of the creams and their aroma received a positive assessment from professional testers. However, the participants in the experiment, ordinary consumers of cosmetics, noted that they did not like the smell of Clean Line and Clinique creams.
“Of course, the smell shouldn’t be irritating,” agrees Nina Serednyakova, head of the testing laboratory for perfumery and cosmetic products at Test . — Fragrance is one of the most allergenic components of the cream. In addition, it happens that in the same series of cosmetics the perfume has one scent, but the cream has a completely different scent. Such an “inconsistency” can mislead consumers and fail to meet their expectations. In general, the ideal version of the cream is “fregrance-free,” that is, odorless. But to produce such cosmetics you need very pure, high-quality ingredients. So the absence of aroma is often an indicator of the high quality of the cream components.
As for color, the absence of colorants and dyes is also a sign of a good cream. The fewer dyes (or better yet, none at all), the lower the likelihood that allergic reactions will occur. By the way, you usually have to tint raw materials that are not very well purified or if the ingredients are of an unpleasant color, Nina Serednyakova reveals the secret. But the white color of the cream most often indicates that the raw materials are initially pure.

ON A NOTE
Officially, all preservatives and dyes that are in the samples (see table) are approved for use and recognized as safe, experts clarify. Potentially, such substances may increase the risk of allergies, especially in people with sensitive skin, but no adverse reactions were noted in any of the participants in the experiment.
MICROBES AND HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES: THERE ARE IMPURITIES, BUT NOT OVERWHELMING
As you know, the ancient Romans added mercury to bleaching products, and in Ancient Egypt they made lead-based eyeliner. Since then, cosmetology has made significant strides forward, however, even today, unscrupulous manufacturers can use raw materials containing toxic elements, Roskontrol experts warn. Therefore, the purchased samples were tested for the presence of lead, arsenic and mercury.
The result is comforting: in none of the creams the mass concentration of hazardous metals exceeds the permissible values. However, there are nuances: the least lead was found in Nivea cream, the most in L'Oreal Paris gel cream and Clean Line cream.
“A small amount of toxic metals can get into creams made from natural raw materials of plant or mineral origin,” explains Irina Konokhova, a doctor and leading expert at NP Roskontrol. — Impurities of heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic) can also be found in dyes. Metals may also be contained in a component of a cosmetic product (for example, mercury in a preservative). In microdoses, metals are not dangerous. But the fewer there are, the better, of course.
As for microbiological indicators, microbial contamination does not exceed acceptable values for all cream samples. This means that the cosmetics were produced in safe sanitary conditions.

Of course, it was important for the experts and participants in the experiment to find out: how long does the vaunted moisturizing effect of creams last, for which we actually buy them?
All manufacturers, except for the Kalina concern (there is no information on the duration of the effect on the Clean Line packaging) promise that their product will moisturize the skin for a “long time”, “all day” and “24 hours”. The experiment showed that manufacturers are lying a lot.
— Clinique turned out to be the fastest-acting - the moisturizing lasted only 2 hours. “Perhaps the fact is that the cream is recommended to be used only in combination with soap and exfoliating lotion of the same brand,” experts suggested.
- Next - in ascending order: L'Oreal Paris gel-cream for normal and mixed skin keeps the skin moisturized for 2-3 hours, Olay day moisturizer - 3 hours.
— The effect of the “Clean Line” cream lasts for 5-6 hours, which confirms the “day” label. “Let’s put it this way: this cream has a “shortened working day,” experts joke.
“And only Garnier and Nivea samples retained the moisturizing effect until the next wash, that is, throughout the day, as the manufacturers promise.
At the same time, the participants in the experiment noted an annoying side effect: increased skin greasiness. My face became oily after using Garnier, L`Oreal Paris, Clean Line and Clinique. In the latter case, this is understandable: the cream was created “for very dry and dry skin.” But the rest of the products are intended “for normal and mixed types.” Therefore, the greasiness effect is clearly undesirable. Two creams passed the test with dignity without any “greasy” side effects: Nivea and Olay.
THIS WILL BE USEFUL!
The fewer ingredients in the cream, the better. As a rule, the list is lengthened by preservatives, dyes and fragrances. The L'Oreal Paris and Clean Line samples had the longest list of ingredients, and Garnier's was slightly shorter. The shortest list is with Nivea cream.
RESULTS OF TESTING IN THE LABORATORY
EXPERT CONCLUSIONS
High price does not guarantee quality
— All purchased cream samples meet mandatory requirements for organoleptic indicators, meet quality and safety standards.
— Garnier and Nivea creams showed the longest moisturizing effect, the shortest was Clinique’s “unique moisturizer.”
— An increase in skin greasiness was noted after using creams from Garnier, L`Oreal Paris, “Clean Line” and Clinique.
— Nivea and Olay were pleased with the absence of side effects (increased skin greasiness).
- The longest list of ingredients, which means the maximum number of preservatives, dyes and fragrances in the composition, was noted in the samples of L'Oreal Paris and Clean Line. The opposite indicator, and therefore the best test result, is for Nivea cream.
“Our examination has once again shown: a high price is not at all an indicator of the quality of a product,” Roskontrol specialists emphasize. — There are conscientious manufacturers in both the premium and mass market segments. Therefore, focus not on the price tag, but on the composition of the cosmetic product indicated on the packaging.”

The brand appeared in 1994 and since then has remained one of the best domestic products for the skin of the hands. “Velvet Hands” is a variety of care cosmetics such as moisturizing soap or anti-aging hand cream-serum.
