A necessary part of cosmetic skin care is massage. It stimulates blood circulation, helps keep your skin smooth longer and look younger than your age. Correct movements, timing, procedure time, determining the condition and type of skin, as well as the right choice of products used during sessions are the most important components of an effective massage. Contraindications are purulent inflammations and malignant formations, infectious diseases and blood diseases, exacerbations of herpes and chronic diseases.
Carrying out a facial massage rejuvenates and relieves tension in the facial muscles. The effectiveness of the procedure is similar to a surgical circular facelift. After forty, massage should be carried out two to four times a month in courses of ten to twelve sessions. The effect of massage will be enhanced by giving up some habits that contribute to skin aging.
Benefits of facial massage at home
Quite often, cosmetologists recommend facial massage instead of plastic surgery. Since this is a more profitable method, and without unpleasant consequences. Using special techniques, you can reach the deep layers of the dermis, thereby activating the production of collagen and elastin.
Benefits of massage:
- Achieving youth and a fresh-looking face.
- Oval correction.
- Obtaining a new relief.
- Acquisition of soft and elastic epidermis.
- Increasing skin immunity.
- Blood flow improves and blood vessels are strengthened.
- Wrinkles are smoothed out.
- Edema and swelling disappear.
Correct massage technique
General rules
Facial massage is always performed smoothly and carefully. It is forbidden to press or stretch the skin; stroking and sliding over the skin is recommended.
Each massage action involves some processes, for example:
- stroking promotes blood circulation and elimination of toxins;
- rubbing with your fingertips in a circular motion - relieves swelling, eliminates deposited fats, accelerates blood flow, and softens scars;
- kneading relieves tension;
- pinching promotes rejuvenation.
Preparing the face
When performing a massage, it is recommended to steam or cleanse your face. You can do water baths with herbal decoctions, just wash your face with hot water or even take a shower. Hands must be thoroughly washed or disinfected. The skin of your fingers should be soft and smooth to avoid scratches on your face, and it is also recommended to remove all rings and bracelets from your hands.
Prepare oil and cream suitable for your skin type. For oily skin, you can add lemon juice or use talc.
Common Mistakes
An incorrectly performed facial massage for wrinkles at home can lead to some consequences.
For example, the following reactions are possible:
- redness;
- swelling;
- worsening wrinkles.
The following mistakes are common when performing massage:
- As a result of rough rubbing, delicate skin can be stretched and flabby. Rubbing should be done with gentle movements so as not to cause pain and microtrauma;
- Massage should be done along massage lines. Otherwise, it is possible to change the oval of the face;
- If the procedure is not carried out regularly, the effect will not be achieved;
- Consider contraindications;
- You need to select lotions, creams and oils for massage according to your skin type to avoid dryness, irritation or rashes.
Combination of cosmetic facial massage techniques with other procedures
Cosmetical tools.
Any effect on the skin and muscle tissue stimulates blood circulation and cleanses the skin, helping to remove harmful substances from the deep layers of the epidermis. Consequently, various cosmetics are better absorbed through open pores. This is why you need to massage your face before using creams and lotions.
It is best if the massage technique coincides with the cosmetic product in terms of its effect on the skin. For example, you can use a deep facial massage technique before applying a serum with a lifting effect.
Hardware cosmetology.
To enhance the positive effect, you can combine, for example, honey massage and microcurrents.
Injection rejuvenation.
Before beauty injections, we recommend visiting a massage parlor. This will prepare your skin for the procedure, and healing will go much faster. But we do not recommend injecting Botox or hyaluronic acid before massaging. Since the metabolism will noticeably speed up and the effect of the drugs will end faster than expected.
The main advantages of the cosmetic facial massage technique:
- gentle stimulation of the skin;
- painlessness of the procedure;
- positive effect on the nervous system;
- improvement of the general condition of the whole organism;
- no complications.
In order for cosmetic procedures to give a positive result, they must be performed by a specialist with a medical education. A professional knows the anatomical structure of the face and all massage lines, and knows how to correctly influence acupuncture points.
Relaxing massage to reduce tension in facial muscles
Our face is mobile, often displays a lot of emotions. In the distant past, people could determine by wrinkles what kind of character a person had. Wrinkles are a consequence not only of age-related changes and pronounced facial expressions, but also a consequence of overwork and tension in the facial muscles.
A variation of the technique of performing a relaxing facial massage that helps slow down the appearance of wrinkles.
Relaxing facial massage, starting from the forehead, gently pressing between the eyebrows, along the bridge of the nose. Then you should make smooth movements from the bridge of the nose to the forehead. You can also include a head massage, starting from the forehead and ending with the back of the head.
General rules for a relaxing massage:
- Eyebrow massage is performed by lightly pinching the eyebrows and eyelids.
- The skin of the eyes needs a gentle, delicate massage. Knead the outer corners and under the eyes.
- The cheekbones are massaged towards the temples using tapping movements with the fingertips. Circular movements are suitable for tense areas. The temporal muscles also require attention.
- The muscles of the mouth are massaged with light pressure and patting movements.
- Finally, lightly pat your face until a feeling of warmth appears.
- Look for tense muscles and massage them again.
If you feel constantly tired, it is recommended to do this massage regularly (for example, daily at the end of the day).
Indications
Indications for sessions are:
- flaccid or sagging skin;
- unclear oval face, presence of a double chin;
- unhealthy skin color;
- dark circles under the eyes;
- circulatory disorders;
- acne;
- age-related skin changes.
Lymphatic drainage massage for full face rejuvenation
From biology class we know that lymph is a clear liquid containing red blood cells. It is also involved in removing toxins. If lymph stagnation occurs, then so-called “waste products” accumulate accordingly.
Lymphatic drainage massage helps to establish lymph flow, thereby:
- improve your complexion;
- rejuvenate facial skin;
- relieve swelling;
- remove dark circles under the eyes;
- normalize sebum secretion;
- relieve stress.
It is recommended to use this massage if you have:
- Bruises under the eyes.
- Expression wrinkles.
- Loss of elasticity.
- Swelling of the face.
- A double chin appeared.
- It is necessary to recover after plastic surgery.
Classic method of lymphatic drainage massage
Japanese or classical massage techniques are often used at home.
The classic method of lymphatic drainage massage includes the following techniques:
- The massage starts from the forehead. Place all your fingers on your forehead and move them to your temples.
- The eyes are massaged with the index fingers from the inner to the outer corner of the eye socket along the lower contour. Then, using spiral movements, move up to the bridge of your nose.
- Massage of cheekbones and cheeks. The movements are performed with all fingers, smoothly spreading them from the center of the chin, then from the corners of the lips and from the middle of the upper lip.
- The nasolabial fold is massaged from the end to the nose with the index fingers.
- Use your thumbs to massage your chin, smoothly moving up to your ears.
The benefits of classic massage
The principle of the technique is based on gentle pressure on the skin with your fingers. To achieve the sliding effect, special means are used. This can be massage oil (slightly warmed) or a rich cream. Sessions are conducted with the aim of activating biochemical processes and restoring water balance. A relaxing effect is also noted, helping to stabilize the psycho-emotional background after suffering stress.
Classic massage refers to cosmetic restorative procedures. Due to the ability to influence subcutaneous processes, manipulations provide a healing effect.
During the massage course, the following results can be achieved:
- smoothing out small wrinkles;
- removal of swelling;
- removal of excess fluid, along with which waste and toxins come out;
- improving blood flow to capillaries;
- enrichment of tissues with nutrients supplied with oxygen;
- smoothing folds and wrinkles;
- increased muscle tone;
- color alignment;
- elimination of double chin.
Thanks to increased blood flow to tissues, metabolic and regenerative functions are activated. Facial features acquire the correct shape, the contour is aligned. Massaging the nasolabial part and chin gives the lips an attractive swelling.
When using special products, an effect is achieved comparable to expensive cosmetic procedures for cleansing the skin and correcting problem areas. The skin becomes fresh, elastic with an even color.

Buccal
The technique was created by the French massage master Joël Siocco. Facial massage for wrinkles is based on the effect on the muscles in the oral cavity from the outside and inside. The buccal technique is used for weakened tissues, pronounced wrinkles, sagging skin, and unclear facial contours. Prolonged treatment of the cheeks on both sides increases the tone of muscle tissue, restores firmness, strength and elasticity of the skin.
The result of the course is the elimination of nasolabial folds, facial wrinkles, improvement of skin condition and color, and the formation of a new facial contour.
Buccal massage is an intense technique that requires caution. Sessions should be performed only in salons, since inept treatment can lead to tissue stretching, bruising and rupture of the capillary network.
Self-massage from Alena Sobol
The massage technique from Alena Sobol is aimed at stimulating metabolic processes, improving the movement of biological fluids and skin respiration. The duration of the home treatment procedure does not exceed 10 minutes.
Apply moisturizing oil or lotion to clean skin. The fingertips follow the massage lines, and only light circular and zigzag strokes are carried out around the eyes. Be careful with the area under the eyes, since the skin there is most sensitive to the effects.
This is followed by spiral rubbing with two fingers from the eyebrows to the hairline. Behind them are pressures along the cartilaginous edge around the eyes. Finish the treatment with light vibration taps over the entire massaged area.

Smoothing movements are applied over the entire face and décolleté area. During movement, the main massage directions are followed, and the pressure force, trajectory and intensity of treatment are selected by the master depending on the type and condition of the skin. Despite the simplicity of the procedure, its effectiveness is noticeable after the first session.

Massage technique by Elena Nosovskaya
When creating the method, Elena Nosovskaya used techniques from the buccal method, chiromassage and oriental practices. This combination allows you to work on tissues on a physical and energetic level: the effect is on muscles, bones, joints, biological fluids and the nervous system.

Popular proprietary techniques for rejuvenating facial massage
Buccal massage technique
Joel Siocco is the author of the buccal massage technique. This is a famous French cosmetologist and biochemist, who at over 60 years old looks like she is 30.
The distinctive feature of this massage is that it targets mainly the lower part of the face, thereby lifting the corners of the lips. And besides, the muscles of the lower third are massaged from the outside and inside (through the mouth with gloves), which is why they hurt, like after a workout.
Chiromassage
The Spaniard Vicent Ferradiz Garcia became the author of chiromassage. He mixed Eastern and Western massage techniques. The master uses the fingertips, palms, elbows and forearms, but does everything gently without kneading.
Contraindications to facial massage
Main contraindications to facial massage:
- Allergy or skin infection.
- Diseases of ENT organs.
- Tumors of various types.
- Diseases of the lymphatic system.
- Low intracranial pressure.
- Poor blood clotting.
- Brittle blood vessels.
- Hirsutism (increased hair growth).
- Many moles on the face.
- After the microdermabrasion procedure.
- Inflamed nerves of the face.
Who is the procedure indicated and contraindicated for?
Many people believe that they should start massage only after clear age-related changes appear on the face, but this is a fundamentally wrong approach. On the contrary, your skin will receive powerful prevention, support, improve its condition and delay the aging process for many years. As a result of regular massage treatments, your face will become noticeably younger and wrinkles will be smoothed out. This procedure is recommended in cases of:
- loss of skin firmness and elasticity;
- change in complexion;
- deterioration of the oval/contours of the face;
- swelling of the area around the eyes;
- the presence of wrinkles, creases;
- appearance of a double chin.
However, this wonderful rejuvenating and toning procedure may not be suitable for everyone. It is contraindicated for:
- any inflammatory processes on the surface of the epidermis;
- herpes infections in the acute stage;
- hemophilia (pathology associated with the inability of blood to clot);
- open wounds, injuries and other damage to the integrity of the epidermis;
- large moles and warts protruding above the surface of the skin.
The best oils for massage
Oil is necessary for facial massage for:
- better gliding of the master’s hands;
- achieving better results;
- toning, moisturizing, nourishing the skin.
As a rule, oil is selected based on your skin type. For dry skin, wheat germ or apricot kernel oil is suitable. For normal skin – olive or almond oil. Oily – jojoba or sunflower oil. For a lifting effect (oval tightening), sandalwood, geranium, rosewood, myrrh, and rose oils are used.
Contraindications
A gentle effect on the skin is not a reason to ignore precautions during the procedure. The classic version of massage is not suitable for those who have the following health problems:
- viral infections (at the development stage and immediately after recovery);
- allergic diseases, dermatitis (if the skin is damaged);
- intolerance to the procedure due to the individual characteristics of the body;
- purulent formations on the face;
- oncology;
- any inflammation occurring in the acute phase;
- increased blood pressure (potential risk of a sharp increase in blood pressure);
- rosacea (red spider veins are visible on the face and body);
- the presence of large growths on the treated area.
Before going to the salon, you need to consult your doctor about contraindications. Then the massage will definitely not provoke health problems. You can also check with your cosmetologist which oils or creams are appropriate to use for a particular skin type. Properly selected products will enhance the rejuvenating effect.
How often should you massage?
Facial massage at home for wrinkles is recommended based on age. If before the age of 30 it should be done once a year with a session of 10 procedures, then after 30 it should be done twice a year, also with 10 procedures.
Author's methods have their own deadlines. For a massage by Joelle Siocco, you will need several times a week, but the number of procedures is from 7 to 10. And for the technique of Vicente Ferradiz García, 5-6 times are enough.
Facial massage is an effective remedy for wrinkles. Using fairly easy technologies at home, you can tighten up your face shape, eliminate crow’s feet and become rejuvenated in general.
